WorldSchool with Karen Yates
Welcome to the Peaceful Worldschooling Podcast.
Today, I have the privilege and honor of introducing you to world schooling mom and Dream creator, Karen Yates. Several years ago, Karen and her husband decided to leave behind the American Dream to pursue their own dreams of traveling the world with their two children. They bought a one-way ticket to Bali and have not looked back!
In this episode, Karen shares some of the life-changing moments that they have experienced while traveling abroad as well as some of the challenges that they have faced as a worldschooling family. She will also share some practical tips for inspiring you to reach your goals right NOW!
Leverage Your Brain to Achieve Your Dreams
My guest today is Karen Yates. She shares how our minds actually work against us when we are trying to make changes to our lives - and what we can do to change our brains to become our greatest asset. She walks us through her 4-step process in making those changes (in mindset and action) to allow people to take the crucial first steps to realize their dreams.
Karen worked for 20 years as a research chemist before realizing that the American dream she had been chasing was further away than ever. Struggling to reconnect with her husband, spend more time with her 2 kids, actually make headway on saving for retirement, and start to really enjoy life, she quit her job, sold or gave away nearly everything, and boarded a plane with one-way tickets to begin traveling the world full-time with her family. That was more than 4 years ago. Now Karen is a motivational speaker who inspires people to go after their dreams by understanding how to overcome their toughest adversary - their own brains.
How To Afford To Travel the World As A Family
The story of John and Karen, a married couple with two kids who decided to travel the world full-time after reaching a low point in their relationship. It covers how they prepared financially, got their kids on board, road schooled the children, dealt with accidents abroad, found purpose through travel, supported local communities, and made the lifestyle sustainable. Their story proves that with proper preparation and resourcefulness, full-time travel can be accessible for more families.
Career Break Story: Finding Passion & Healing
Karen left her chemistry career of 20 years after she and her husband realized that they really wanted to spend more time with each other as well as with their two kids. What is a better way to spend time as a family than to decide to travel the world. This journey allowed them to find their passion, share their story, and start their business.

Inspire How To Save Money
I travel the world with my husband and 2 kids!
But I wasn't always so bold... I spent 20 years as a pharmaceutical research chemist, moving steadily up the ladder, living the 'American Grind' lifestyle before realizing that I wanted more out of life - that I wanted to spend more time with my husband and children. That I wanted stronger relationships with each of them. That I wanted to live a life of my own choosing.
Financially, we had been decimated by 4 job losses, several out- of-state moves, rental properties lost during the 2008 mortgage crisis, and most recently, a real-estate flip that turned into a flop. We were in no position to leave my job and travel, but it was a dream that we knew we had to pursue.
What followed was a story of perseverance and determination. We made it happen with the money that we had and boarded a plane 7 months later with one-way tickets.
Along the way, my husband and I realized that what had been missing throughout our 20 years of marriage was alignment — with each other and with our goals. It was through real, heart- felt communication that we were able to find this alignment and make our dream a reality, despite our seemingly impossible short timeline and lack of any real savings.
